WASA, Hyderabad: Providing Quality Water Supply and Sewerage Services
Prior to 1977, the responsibility of water supply and sewerage services in Hyderabad rested with the Public Health Engineering Department and later with the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. However, due to inefficiencies and deteriorating infrastructure, the system faced numerous challenges. In response, the Hyderabad Development Authority (HDA) was established in 1976 to focus on the development, improvement, and beautification of urban areas within Hyderabad Division.
To address the existing issues, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) was formed under the umbrella of the HDA in 1977. WASA was entrusted with the operation and maintenance of water supply and sewerage services in Hyderabad. Its key objectives were to ensure the provision of high-quality water supply, maintain effective sewerage services, and collect water and sewerage taxes.
The establishment of WASA aimed to bring about improvements and overcome the financial deficit that plagued the previous agencies. In this regard, the Government of Sindh began providing subsidies from 1981-82 onwards, ranging from Rs. 10.00 to Rs. 15.00 million per annum. This financial support played a crucial role in addressing the deficit and facilitating infrastructure development.
